The wellness industry built itself on people doing more. This is for the people doing less, on purpose, with style.

The thesis

You are not going to wake up at 5am. You are not going to do a 90-minute vinyasa. You are, however, going to lie down — probably for several hours, mostly today. Lazy-girl posture is the discipline of making horizontal time work for the spine instead of against it.

Set up the surfaces

Most posture problems are furniture problems. Three small fixes:

  1. Pillow height. Side sleeper? Your pillow should fill the gap between your ear and the mattress. Back sleeper? Thinner. Stomach sleeper? Tragically, no pillow — we love you, we worry.
  2. Laptop on a stack of books. Top of screen at eye level. The books can be unread.
  3. Phone holder at the gym, on the desk, on the bedside. The forward neck creep is a phone-in-hand problem. Take the phone out of your hand.
Discipline is buying the right pillow once. Effort is doing the wrong thing forever.

The horizontal routine

Three things, all of them lying down.

The book-on-the-belly breath

Lie on your back. Place a book on your stomach. Breathe so the book rises. Five minutes. Resets a clenched diaphragm — which, surprise, holds the neck in place.

The wall-shoulder squeeze

Lie flat. Bend the knees. Press the back of your shoulders into the floor and hold for ten seconds. Release. Repeat eight times. Counters every hour you sat curled over a laptop.

The horizontal scroll

This one is permission, not punishment. If you're going to lie down and look at your phone, do it on your back, phone above your face, elbows propped on a pillow. Not on your side curled like a shrimp. Your neck knows the difference.

The vertical bonus

One vertical move, because we are still mammals: stand up every hour. Walk to the window. Look out of it. That's the whole vertical routine.


Lazy-girl posture is not lazy. It's posture engineered around the body you actually have, on the days you actually have it. Soft, screen-aware, and quietly working.
